Tyrion Lannister actor Peter Dinklage asks people to think twice before taking dogs home.
Animal charities are urging Game of Thrones fans to stop buying huskies because they look like “direwolves”, as record numbers of the dogs are being abandoned.
The rise in popularity of huskies and other “wolf-like” dogs has been linked to the fantasy series, but many are being left in shelters because their owners cannot look after them.
Around 10 husky dogs were abandoned a year before 2011, when Games of Thrones first aired. The number rose to 81 last year, according to the Blue Cross.
More are expected to be left without homes as the new season continues.
Peter Dinklage, who plays the character Tyrion Lannisterteamed up with PETA to encourage people to think twice before buying a husky.
“We understand that due to the direwolves’ huge popularity, many folks are going out and buying huskies.
“Not only does this hurt all the deserving homeless dogs waiting for a chance at a good home in shelters, but shelters are also reporting that many of these huskies are being abandoned – as often happens when dogs are bought on impulse, without understanding their needs,” Dinklage said.
“Please, please, if you’re going to bring a dog into your family, make sure that you’re prepared for such a tremendous responsibility and remember to always, always, adopt from a shelter.“
The Blue Cross is urging potential pet owners to make sure they research the needs of huskiesthoroughly before giving one a home.
Danielle Mason, rehoming centre manager at Southampton Blue Cross, said: “Huskies are very beautiful dogs, but they do need experienced owners with lots of time to devote to them – they are a working breed and need at least a couple of hours exercise each day to keep them happy.”
